March to Your Own Beat

I have found myself surfing the internet or looking at social media to see what people are up to and before I knew it, I’d be trying to figure out how I could model something they were doing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s healthy to learn from others especially if you are connected with people who have been where you want to go. But if we’re not careful, we will start joining another person’s band when we really need to march to our own beat.

Each of us has gifts and I believe that The Creator gave them to us at the start of our existence. They are unique to us, even if someone else is doing something similar. It’s like a fingerprint. We all have them but there are no two alike. So there’s no need for us to evaluate ourselves against or compete with others in a constant effort to see if we measure up or to try to keep up. Create your own personal standards and do a self-assessment to check your progress. Then you know you are focused on the goals you set for yourself as opposed to being driven by what other people are doing. This helps to establish your rhythm allowing you to move at your own pace and when you do it consistently, you will get to where you want to be every time. Don’t get distracted. Just stay focused on what you’re trying to produce!
